Things To Do

Located just five miles from Grant is Cathedral Caverns State Park. Cathedral Caverns is noted among cave enthusiasts for its massive entrance. The huge opening measures 126 feet wide and 25 feet high, a possible world record for commercial caves.  Archaeological excavations at the cavern's mouth indicate that human use of the cave by Native Americans dates back 8,000 years. The cave was opened as a commercial attraction in 1955 by local entrepreneur Jay Gurley.  Inside the cavern are some of the most beautiful formations Mother Nature has ever created including “Goliath”- one of the largest stalagmites in the world measuring 45 feet tall and 243 feet in circumference.

Honeycomb Natural Bridge is a stunning spot located in Grant. The natural bridge offers stunning views of Ghost Creek Falls that flow underneath it. This gem is located right off the road, so no major hikes are needed.

Not far from Grant, Marshall County’s Painted Bluff cliff, along the Tennessee River, features more than 80 prehistoric images dating back 600 years. The images, which include depictions of fish, snakes, animals and anthropomorphic human figures, are examples of rock art that were important parts of prehistoric religion. The pictographs were in danger from weather, graffiti, rock climbing, and vandalism, but preservation efforts are underway to save what has been called "one of, if not the, most important rock-art occurrence in the southeastern United States."

During the Creek Indian War, General Andrew Jackson utilized caves along the Tennessee River to store supplies and munitions.  One such cave is located approximately 200 yards from Deposit Light #352.6 and is marked.  This 1914 marker, which is about 7 inches high and 4 inches deep, is placed almost directly above the entrance to the now-submerged Jackson's Cave, and is inscribed as follows: “Gen. Andrew Jackson 1813-1914, Ala. D.A.R.”

Grant is also home to the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School.  Started in 1924 by the Alabama Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the school’s mission is to educate the young people of the area in patriotism, citizenship, and American values.  It is one of only two DAR Schools in the United States.
